Sydney's Secret Garden

When we have visitors from overseas we are often prompted to explore our home locations in new ways.

Led by the desire to find and show off special parts of Sydney, I was looking for things to do in the North Sydney area and came across a free option that was a delightful surprise: Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden.

Starting at Lunar Park we did a short but beautiful waterside walk around Lavender Bay to find Wendy’s Garden.

The garden was created by Wendy Whiteley who has nurtured it for over 20 years and she is still overseeing it’s upkeep and development today with the help of several gardeners.

In between her home and the bay Wendy has spectacularly transformed what was once an unused rail yard space and it is an inspirational place to visit.

Visiting in February this year it was a beautiful day, cloudy but very warm, there were a small number of individuals and groups in the garden but it wasn’t crowded.

You find there is more space than expected after taking in the beautiful harbour views and descending the stairs into the tranquillity of the garden.

There are a number of semi-private spaces and we are keen to visit again with a picnic packed, as it is an extremely peaceful place we would love to relax in and enjoy for a few hours.

For those with young children or limited mobility access could be difficult as there are a number of stairs.

The garden was built on government land and thankfully they are keen to help protect it.

In 2015 the government granted a 30 year lease to North Sydney council, with a 30 year roll-over clause and in 2017 a Trust was set up to help care for it also, with a $30,000 contribution being made by the NSW government.

Deeply inspired by travel, animals and nature I am always seeking new opportunities to explore our amazing planet.
